To safely peel garlic, either use a garlic peeler by rolling the clove inside, or gently crush the clove with the flat side of a knife to loosen the skin before peeling it off by hand.
Peeling garlic can be a sticky and sometimes frustrating task, but with the right technique, it can be quick and easy. Here are two methods: using a garlic peeler and peeling by hand.
Method 1: Using a Garlic Peeler
Separate the cloves from the garlic bulb.
Place one or two cloves inside the garlic peeler (usually a silicone tube).
Roll the peeler back and forth on a countertop with firm pressure.
Remove the cloves. The skin should be separated and easily removable.
Method 2: Peeling by Hand
Separate the cloves from the garlic bulb.
Place a clove on a cutting board.
Lay the flat side of a chef's knife over the clove.
Gently press down on the knife with the palm of your hand to crush the clove slightly. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, or you'll mash the garlic.
The skin should loosen. Peel it off with your fingers.
To easily remove the garlic smell from your hands after peeling, rub them on a stainless steel object, like your sink or a spoon, under cold running water. The sulfur compounds in garlic bind to the stainless steel, neutralizing the odor.
