To prevent herbs from wilting quickly, store them properly by either refrigerating them like cut flowers in water or wrapping them in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag. This helps maintain their moisture and freshness.
Herbs wilt quickly because they lose moisture. There are two primary methods to combat this:
The Flower Method (for herbs like parsley, cilantro, basil, mint): Trim the stems of the herbs and place them in a glass or jar filled with water, just like you would with cut flowers. Cover the herbs loosely with a plastic bag (you can use a produce bag) and refrigerate. Change the water every 1-2 days. The water keeps the stems hydrated, and the bag helps maintain humidity.
The Damp Paper Towel Method (for herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano, sage): Lightly dampen a paper towel. Wrap the herbs in the damp paper towel and place them in a plastic bag or airtight container. Refrigerate. The damp paper towel provides moisture without making the herbs soggy. Check the paper towel every few days and re-dampen it if necessary.
These methods help to slow down the respiration rate of the herbs, keeping them fresh for a longer period.
Avoid washing herbs before storing them unless they are visibly dirty. Washing them adds extra moisture, which can promote spoilage. If you do wash them, make sure they are thoroughly dried before storing. A salad spinner works great for this!
