Transform uneven slices into croutons, breadcrumbs, or use them in bread pudding. These applications don't require perfectly shaped slices.
When you end up with a lopsided or uneven slice of bread, cake, or other baked good, don't despair! There are several ways to repurpose it effectively:
Croutons: Cut the uneven slice into small cubes. Toss with olive oil, herbs, and spices. Bake at a low temperature (around 300°F or 150°C) until golden brown and crispy. These are perfect for salads or soups.
Breadcrumbs: Dry the slice thoroughly, either in a low oven or by leaving it out overnight. Once completely dry, pulse it in a food processor until you achieve the desired crumb consistency. Use these breadcrumbs for coating chicken, topping casseroles, or as a binder in meatballs.
Bread Pudding: Tear the uneven slice into smaller pieces and soak them in a custard mixture (eggs, milk, sugar, and spices). Bake until set and golden brown. The uneven shape will be completely disguised in the final product.
French Toast Casserole: Similar to bread pudding, an uneven slice can be cubed and incorporated into a French toast casserole. The custard will soften the bread, and the final bake will create a delicious and forgiving dish.
Stuffing/Dressing: If you're making stuffing or dressing, uneven slices of bread are perfect. Cube or tear the bread and let it dry slightly before adding it to your stuffing mixture.
When making breadcrumbs, consider adding a pinch of garlic powder or Italian seasoning to the food processor for extra flavor. This will elevate your breadcrumbs and add a delicious touch to any dish you use them in.
